Why won't my Android phone charge past 80%?

Steps to check

  1. Check for a charging limit or Battery protection notice

Look at the status bar and any charging notification. Phrases like Protecting your battery, Charging stopped to protect your battery, or Limit to 80% mean the phone is holding the charge on purpose. This is usually a setting, not a broken charger.

  2. Turn off or change the 80% limit (Samsung)

On many Galaxy phones, Battery protection controls how full the battery gets. Open Settings → Battery → Battery protection. If Maximum is selected with a limit around 80%, switch to Basic (allows 100%, then pauses near full) or Adaptive (often holds near 80% overnight, then finishes toward 100% before you wake). Menu names can differ by software version.

Samsung Settings → Battery → Battery protection. Choose Basic, Adaptive, or Maximum (Maximum lets you set a custom stop level on supported One UI versions).
  3. Turn off Limit to 80% (Pixel)

On Pixel 6a and later, Charging optimization can include Limit to 80%. Open Settings → Battery → Battery health → Charging optimization. Turn the feature off, or choose Adaptive Charging instead of Limit to 80%, when you need a full charge today. Pixel may still charge to 100% about every 10th cycle for battery readings even with the limit on. Leave it plugged in after it hits 100% if the phone asks you to finish that check.

Pixel Settings → Battery → Battery health → Charging optimization. Turn off Use charging optimization, or switch from Limit to 80% to Adaptive Charging. If you see Protecting your battery after long hot charges, tap Charge to full under Battery or restart the phone.
  4. Rule out heat pausing the charge

Phones often slow or pause charging when they are warm. Unplug, let the phone cool in a ventilated place, remove a thick case, then plug into a wall charger again. Avoid charging under a pillow or in a hot car. If heat keeps stopping the charge, fix the heat first.

  5. Confirm the percentage is really stuck

After you change Battery protection or Charging optimization, restart the phone, plug into a wall charger, and watch Settings → Battery for several minutes. The number should climb past 80% toward 100% when no limit is active. Wireless charging is a useful second check, but a wired wall charger is clearer.

  6. When it is not a protection setting

If Battery protection and Charging optimization are off (or set to allow 100%) and the phone still never rises past the mid-80s with a known-good cable and outlet, try the cable, port, and accessory checks in the not-charging guide. Persistent failure after those steps may need repair.

Normal vs. not

Usually normal

Charging that stops near 80% when Maximum Battery protection or Limit to 80% is on, or Adaptive modes that finish to 100% closer to when you usually unplug.

Worth a closer look

No rise past the mid-80s after you turn those limits off, with a cool phone and a known-good wall charger and cable.

What people are saying

Common questions

Is stopping at 80% bad for my phone?

No. Phone makers add this option to reduce time spent at a full charge, which can help battery health over years. Turn it off when you need a full day of power.

Why did my Pixel charge to 100% even with Limit to 80% on?

Google says the phone needs a full charge about every 10th cycle so battery capacity readings stay accurate. Leave it plugged in as directed, then the 80% limit can apply again.

What is Adaptive Battery protection on Samsung?

Adaptive learns your sleep routine. It often holds near 80% overnight, then switches so the phone can reach a fuller charge before you wake. Irregular sleep may make it behave more like Basic.
