How do I check my Android phone's battery health?

On a Samsung Galaxy, open the Samsung Members app, go to Phone diagnostics, and tap Battery status. On a newer Pixel, open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery health. On many Motorola phones, open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery info. If the result says Weak, Bad, or Reduced, the battery has worn down and may need replacing.
Every phone battery slowly holds less charge as it ages. A health check tells you whether a short battery life is a setting you can fix or a battery that is simply getting old. The check is free, takes a minute, and does not change anything on your phone.
Steps to check
Open the battery health check for your phone
Each brand keeps this check in a different place. Find your phone's brand below and follow its steps.
- Samsung Open the Samsung Members app. Tap Support, then under Phone diagnostics tap Get started. Tap Battery status. On Android 12 and later you can also reach the same checks from Settings → Device care → Diagnostics → Phone diagnostics.
- Pixel Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery health. This status shows on Pixel 8a and newer. Pixel 6a through Pixel 8 Pro do not show a battery health status.
- Motorola Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery info. You will see the battery's health compared with when it was new, plus the date it was made, the date it was first used, and its cycle count. Motorola says this screen is not available in all countries.
Read the result
The wording depends on the brand. Here is what each result means.
- Samsung Normal means there are no performance issues. Weak means the battery's efficiency may have dropped from long use or the conditions it has been used in. Bad means it has worn down a lot, and Samsung suggests visiting a service centre.
- Pixel Normal means the battery is fine. Reduced means it now holds less than 80% of its original capacity, and Google suggests considering a replacement. Tap Battery capacity on the same screen to see the estimated percentage.
- Motorola The health percentage shows how much charge the battery can hold compared with a new one. A lower number means shorter battery life between charges.
Decide whether you need a new battery
If the check says Normal, the battery itself is not the problem. Short battery life is more likely caused by apps or settings, and our battery drain guide walks through those. If the check says Weak, Bad, or Reduced, a battery replacement is the real fix. Contact your phone maker, your carrier, or an authorized repair shop.
- Pixel Google suggests replacing a Pixel battery when its capacity falls below 80%, or after about 800 charge cycles on Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Fold, or about 1,000 cycles on Pixel 8a and later.
Still not working?
- If the Samsung Members check will not open, Samsung suggests trying it in the Samsung Internet browser instead.
- If you cannot find Battery health or Battery info in Settings, use the search bar at the top of Settings and type battery.
- If your phone has no battery health screen at all, watch for the signs above, or ask your carrier or phone maker to run a battery test.
- If your phone gets a battery degradation alert on a Samsung Galaxy, Samsung advises having it looked at by a service centre.
- If the check says Normal but the battery still runs out quickly, see why the battery drains overnight.
Why this happens
Phone batteries wear out a little every time they are charged and used. Over a few years they hold less charge, so the phone needs charging more often.
Google lists temperature, charging habits, and how the phone is used as things that wear a battery down. It suggests charging in a cool room and not leaving the phone in high heat, such as a hot car, for hours.
Some phones slow this aging on their own. Newer Pixels, for example, gently adjust the battery as it ages to help it last.
Signs your battery is getting old
Even without a health screen, a few signs point to an aging battery. Samsung lists the battery running down noticeably faster than it used to and the phone switching off unexpectedly, especially in the cold.
If the back of your phone is bulging, or the screen is lifting away from the body, the battery may be swollen. Do not try to open the phone or fix it yourself. Take it to your phone maker or a repair shop. Google notes that a lifted screen can let dust or liquid in, and an exposed battery is easier to damage.
Normal vs. not
Usually normal
A phone a few years old shows its battery health a bit lower than when it was new, and needs charging a little sooner than before.
Worth a closer look
The phone shuts off with charge still showing, gets a Bad or Reduced result, or the case is swelling. Those mean the battery needs attention.
Common questions
- Is there a code I can dial to check battery health?
- We recommend the built-in checks in this guide instead. They are the methods Samsung, Google, and Motorola document, and they explain the results in plain words.
- Do I need to download an app to check battery health?
- Usually not. Samsung Members comes installed on Galaxy phones, and Pixel and Motorola phones show it in Settings. Be careful with apps that promise to fix your battery. They cannot repair a worn battery.
- Does charging to 80% help the battery last longer?
- It can help a little over time. That is why some phones stop at 80%. See why your phone won't charge past 80%.
