Why did my contacts disappear from my Android phone?

Steps to check

  1. Check whether your contacts are safe in your Google Account

Contacts saved to your Google Account live in the account, not only on the phone. On a computer or another device, go to contacts.google.com and sign in with the same Google Account. If your contacts are listed there, they are safe, and the problem is only how the phone is showing or syncing them. The next steps will bring them back. If they are not there either, skip to the Trash and Undo changes steps.

  2. Make sure the Contacts app is showing all of your contacts

The Contacts app can be set to show only one account, so contacts saved somewhere else look missing. In Google's Contacts app, check which account is selected at the top right and switch to the one that should have your contacts.

Samsung Open Contacts, tap the Menu (three lines) at the top left, then tap All contacts. Samsung notes that filtering by one account or group can make contacts appear missing.Pixel Pixel uses Google's Contacts app. Tap your profile picture at the top right and pick the Google Account that holds your contacts.
  3. Turn sync for contacts back on

If sync for Contacts is turned off, the phone stops updating your Google contacts. Open Settings, tap Passwords & accounts (it may be called Users & accounts, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, or Manage accounts), tap your Google Account, then tap Account sync and make sure Contacts is on. To refresh right away, tap More, then Sync now. Give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi.

Samsung Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts. Turn on Auto sync data at the bottom of the screen, then tap your Google Account → Sync account and turn on Contacts.Pixel Settings → Passwords, passkeys & autofill → your Google Account → Account sync. Turn on Contacts, or tap More → Sync now.
  4. Recover contacts from Trash

Deleted Google contacts go to Trash and stay there for 30 days. In Google's Contacts app, select the right account at the top right, then at the bottom tap Organize, then Trash. Tap a contact and tap Recover, or tap More, Select all, then Recover to bring them all back. Trash only loads when the phone is online and automatic sync is on.

Samsung Samsung's Contacts app has its own Recycle bin: open Contacts, tap the Menu (three lines), tap Recycle bin, tap Edit, select the contacts, and tap Restore all. You can also check Trash at contacts.google.com.
  5. Undo recent changes to your contacts

If many contacts vanished at once, you can roll your whole list back to how it was at an earlier time, up to 30 days ago. In Google's Contacts app, tap your profile picture at the top right, tap Contacts settings, then under Edit contacts tap Undo changes. Choose the account, pick a time from before the contacts went missing, and tap Confirm. You can do the same on a computer at contacts.google.com under Settings, Undo changes. Any contacts added after the time you choose will not show up, so pick the most recent time that works.

  6. On a new or reset phone, restore contacts from your backup

If your contacts were on an old phone, you can copy them to this one from your Google backup. Open Settings, tap Google, then All services, and under Backup & restore tap Restore contacts. Choose your Google Account, tap the old phone, choose whether to include SIM card or device storage contacts, and tap Restore. Wait for the message Contacts restored. Google notes it only restores contacts the phone does not already have, so you will not get duplicates.

  7. Keep it from happening again

Some contacts are saved only on the phone or the SIM card, not in your Google Account, and Google warns these can be lost if the phone is lost or damaged. To save them to your Google Account automatically, open Settings, tap Google (or your profile picture), then All services. Under Backup & restore, tap Google Contacts sync, choose your account, tap View settings, and turn on Backup device-only & SIM contacts automatically. Google notes this option depends on your phone's make and model.

Samsung Samsung points to the same Google setting: in Contacts, tap the Menu → Manage contacts → Sync contacts, then the three dots → Google Backup and sync settings, and make sure automatic backup and sync is on for device contacts.

Normal vs. not

Usually normal

Contacts take a few minutes to appear after you turn sync back on or sign in on a new phone. Removing a Google Account from the phone also removes its contacts from that phone, but they stay in your account and come back when you sign in again.

Worth a closer look

Your contacts are missing from contacts.google.com and from Trash, and Undo changes does not bring them back. Contacts that were only on the phone or SIM, or that were deleted from Trash for good, cannot be recovered through Google.

What people are saying

Common questions

I turned off contact sync and my contacts vanished. Are they deleted?

Usually not. If they were Google contacts, they are still in your Google Account. Check contacts.google.com on a computer, then turn Contacts sync back on in your phone's account settings and give it a few minutes.

How long do I have to get deleted contacts back?

Google keeps deleted contacts in Trash for 30 days, and Undo changes can go back up to 30 days. After a contact is deleted from Trash for good, it cannot be recovered.

Why do contacts disappear on one phone when I delete them on another?

Google contacts sync to every device signed in to the same Google Account, so deleting a contact on one phone removes it everywhere. Samsung notes this is a common reason contacts seem to disappear when one account is used on more than one phone.
