How do I hide my number when calling from my Android phone?

For one call in the US, dial *67 and then the full number. To hide your number on every call, open the Phone app, tap the three dots, then Settings. On Samsung, tap Supplementary services, then Show your caller ID, then Never. On Pixel and Motorola, tap Calling accounts, your SIM, Additional settings, Caller ID, then Hide number.
Steps to check
For one call, dial *67 first
Open the Phone app keypad. Type *67, then the full 10-digit number including the area code, and tap Call. The person you call sees something like Private or Anonymous instead of your number. This works in the US on carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, and it only covers that one call. If you call back from your call history, the code is not added, so type it again.
For every call, open the Phone app settings
Open the Phone app, tap the three dots (More options) at the top right, and tap Settings.
Find the caller ID setting
The caller ID setting lives in a slightly different place on each brand.
- Samsung Tap Supplementary services, then Show your caller ID.
- Pixel Tap Calling accounts, then the name of your SIM or carrier, then Additional settings, then Caller ID.
- Motorola Tap Calling accounts, then your SIM, then Additional settings, then Caller ID. On some models you tap Calls instead of Calling accounts.
Choose to hide your number
Pick the option that hides your number. Your number stays hidden on outgoing calls until you change it back.
- Samsung Choose Never. (Always shows your number. Network default lets your carrier decide.)
- Pixel Choose Hide number.
- Motorola Choose Hide number.
Show your number again
Go back to the same setting and choose Always (Samsung) or Show number (Pixel and Motorola). Network default also works and lets your carrier decide. If your number is hidden on every call but you need to show it for just one call, Verizon says you can dial *82 before the number.
Still not working?
- If the Caller ID option is grayed out, missing, or shows an error, your carrier controls it. AT&T says it can add the feature to your line at no extra charge if your phone does not have the setting. Verizon customers can turn on Caller ID Blocking in the My Verizon app under the line's blocked services.
- If people still see your number, check that you changed the setting on the SIM you are calling from. Phones with two SIMs have a separate setting for each one.
- If the person you are calling never answers, they may block private or unknown numbers. Samsung warns that you will not be able to reach someone who has turned on blocking for unknown numbers. Show your number and try again.
- If you are calling a toll-free number or 911, your number will still show. AT&T and Verizon both say caller ID blocking does not work for those calls.
- If you are outside the US, *67 may not work. Ask your mobile provider which code they use, or use the Phone app setting above.
Why this happens
Hiding your number is a service from your mobile carrier, not something the phone does on its own. The phone setting simply asks the carrier to hold your number back. That is why some carriers gray the setting out, and why the result can depend on where you are.
Caller ID blocking only covers voice calls. Text messages always show your number, so anyone you text can still see it.
Normal vs. not
Usually normal
The person you call sees Private, Anonymous, No Caller ID, or something similar. Some people do not pick up calls like this.
Worth a closer look
Your calls fail to connect after you change the setting. Set caller ID back to Network default and contact your carrier.
Common questions
- Does hiding my number cost anything?
- AT&T and Verizon both say caller ID blocking is free. Other carriers may differ, so check with yours if you are not sure.
- Will my number be hidden when I send a text?
- No. Hiding your caller ID only works for phone calls. Your number still shows on every text message you send.
- Can I hide my number from just one person every time?
- Not with a setting. Dial *67 before their number each time you call them, or hide your number for all calls and use *82 for the calls where you want it to show.
