How do I fix Android mobile data not working?

Steps to check

  1. Restart, then compare Wi-Fi and mobile data

Restart the phone first. Then open Settings and turn Wi-Fi off so you are testing mobile data alone. Turn Mobile data (or Cellular data) on. Try loading a simple webpage. Google's connection help uses this Wi-Fi versus mobile data comparison to see which path is broken.

Samsung Settings → Connections → turn Wi-Fi off; turn Mobile data on (or use the Quick settings tiles)Pixel Settings → Network & internet → turn Wi-Fi off; SIMs → Mobile data on
  2. Toggle Mobile data off and on, and look for a data icon

In Settings, open Network & internet or Connections, then Mobile data or Cellular data. Turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. With Wi-Fi off, look near the signal bars for a data label such as LTE, 4G, 5G, or similar. No data icon can mean weak coverage. Move to a window or outdoors and try again. If this happens often in the same place, ask your carrier about coverage.

Samsung Settings → Connections → Data usage or Mobile networks → Mobile dataPixel Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Mobile data. Confirm Use SIM is on for your carrier.
  3. Turn Airplane mode on, wait, then turn it off

Airplane mode briefly resets the radio. Turn it on, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it off. Check whether apps load on mobile data. Many people also fix a stuck "No internet connection" state this way when signal bars still look fine.

Samsung Quick settings → Airplane mode, or Settings → Connections → Airplane modePixel Quick Settings → Airplane mode, or Settings → Network & internet → Airplane mode
  4. Confirm the SIM is active and seated

Open the SIM settings and confirm your carrier name appears and the SIM is enabled. For a physical SIM, power off, reseat the card, and power on. If the phone says No SIM, try cleaning the card gently or ask the carrier for a replacement. Dual-SIM phones: confirm the correct line has Mobile data assigned to it.

Samsung Settings → Connections → SIM manager (wording can vary). Confirm the SIM is on and which SIM provides mobile data.Pixel Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → select your carrier → Use SIM on, Mobile data on
  5. Reset mobile network settings if nothing else works

This clears mobile network configuration on the phone. You will not erase photos or apps. After the reset, restart, turn Mobile data on, and test again with Wi-Fi off. If data still fails on this phone but works in another phone with the same SIM, the phone needs maker support. If no phone works on that SIM, contact the carrier about outages, account status, or APN settings.

Samsung Settings → General management → Reset → Reset mobile network settingsPixel Settings → System → Reset options → Reset mobile network settings (path can vary by Android version)

Normal vs. not

Usually normal

No data icon in a basement or rural spot, or a brief outage that clears after Airplane mode or a restart.

Worth a closer look

Mobile data stays on with strong bars but no app will load after a network reset, or the phone shows No SIM while the card is correctly inserted.

What people are saying

Common questions

Why do I have signal bars but no internet?

Bars show some connection to the cell network, not always a working data session. Toggle Airplane mode, confirm Mobile data is on, and ask your carrier about data plan or outage issues.

Will resetting mobile network settings erase my photos?

No. It resets network configuration. You may need to rejoin Wi-Fi networks afterward if you also reset Wi-Fi settings. Photos, contacts, and apps stay on the phone.

Should I turn off Battery Saver when testing 5G?

On some Pixel phones, Battery Saver can turn off 5G. If you expect 5G, turn Battery Saver off for the test, then check with your carrier about 5G coverage in your area.
