Steps to check

  1. Force restart if the phone will not respond

When the screen is stuck on or nothing responds, use the hardware buttons. Hold them until the phone restarts (the screen may go black, then show the logo). Pixel Help says to hold Power about 30 seconds if the phone is frozen with the screen on. On many Samsung phones, hold Side (Power) and Volume down together for more than 7 seconds. Wait for the lock screen, then see if the phone responds normally.

Samsung Press and hold Side (Power) and Volume down together for more than 7 seconds until the phone restarts.Pixel Hold Power about 30 seconds to restart a frozen phone. On Pixel 6 and later, Power and Volume up for a few seconds can also open the power menu or force a restart from some stuck states.
  2. After it restarts, free storage if space is very low

Pixel Help notes that a phone can have problems when less than about 10% of storage is free. Open Settings → Storage and clear space if you are nearly full: empty Downloads, remove unused apps, and move or delete large videos you no longer need. Then restart once more and use the phone for a few minutes to see if freezes stop.

Samsung Settings → Battery and device care (or Device care) → Storage, or Settings → Storage. Clear cache or large files before you delete photos you want to keep.Pixel Settings → Storage. Review Free up space suggestions, then restart and test.
  3. Update apps and system software

Outdated apps and system software are common causes of freezes and crashes. In Play Store, open your profile → Manage apps & devices and install available updates. Then check for a system update. Prefer Wi-Fi and a plugged-in phone for large downloads. Restart after updates finish.

Samsung Settings → Software update (or System updates) → Download and install. Also update apps from Play Store or Galaxy Store.Pixel Settings → System → System update → Check for update. Play Store → profile → Manage apps & devices for app updates.
  4. Force stop a stuck app, then try Safe mode

If only one app freezes the phone, open Settings → Apps, select that app, and tap Force stop. If freezes keep happening across apps, restart into Safe mode so only built-in apps run. Use the phone for a while. If it stays stable in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely cause. Restart normally to leave Safe mode, then uninstall recently added apps one at a time and test after each.

Samsung Open the power menu, touch and hold Power off until Safe mode appears, then tap Safe mode. "Safe mode" shows at the bottom of the screen.Pixel Power off, then hold Power until the startup animation. Hold Volume down until Safe mode starts. Or from the power menu on newer Pixels, touch and hold Power off, then confirm Safe mode. Restart again to leave Safe mode.
  5. When to get repair help or consider a reset

If the phone still freezes after a force restart, freeing storage, updates, and Safe mode, contact Google, Samsung, or your carrier for repair help. A factory reset is a last step only after you back up photos, contacts, and important files. Resetting erases the phone. If an app caused the freezes and you reinstall that same app later, the problem can return.

Normal vs. not

Usually normal

A brief pause after a big update while the phone finishes setup, or one app that needs Force stop once in a while.

Worth a closer look

The whole phone stuck with the screen on and no response to taps or buttons until a force restart, freezes that continue in Safe mode, or freezing that started right after a drop or liquid exposure.

Common questions

What is the difference between a frozen phone and a dead touchscreen?

A frozen phone often shows a stuck screen or spinning wait cursor and may still light up. A dead touchscreen may show the lock screen but ignore taps. Both start with a force restart. If only touch fails after restart, see our touch screen guide.

Will Safe mode delete my photos?

No. Safe mode only turns off downloaded apps temporarily. Your photos and files stay on the phone. Restart normally to leave Safe mode.

Should I factory reset right away?

No. Try force restart, free storage, updates, and Safe mode first. Back up everything before a factory reset, because it erases the phone.
