Where are my downloads on my Android phone?

Most downloads go to the Downloads folder. Open your phone's files app (Files by Google on Pixel and many other phones, My Files on Samsung) and tap Downloads, or look under Recents. Files saved from Chrome are also listed in Chrome's own Downloads menu. Some apps, like Netflix or YouTube, keep downloads inside the app instead.
Steps to check
Open your phone's files app
Every Android phone has an app that shows the files stored on it, a bit like the folders on a computer. On Pixel and many other phones it is called Files by Google, or just Files. On Samsung it is called My Files. If you cannot spot it, swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to see all your apps, tap the search bar at the top, and type Files.
- Samsung My Files, usually inside the Samsung folder on the home screen or in the apps list. Search the apps list for My Files if it is not there
- Pixel Files (Files by Google), in the apps list
Tap Downloads, or look under Recents
Files you download from the internet are sorted into a Downloads category. Tap it to see them, newest near the top. The Recents section is also worth a look, because it shows files that were recently downloaded, added, or changed. If the list is long, use the sort option to order it by date so the newest files come first.
- Samsung My Files → Categories → Downloads. You can also tap Internal storage → Download to see the same folder
- Pixel Files → Recents, or Files → Categories → Downloads. To sort: More (three dots) → Sort by → Date
Search for the file by name
If you remember part of the file name, the search option in your files app is the fastest way to find it. On Samsung, you can also narrow the search by type of file (such as documents or images) or by when it was saved, like the past 7 days.
- Samsung My Files → Search (magnifying glass) → type the name. Tap Type or Time to narrow the results
- Pixel Files → search bar at the top → type the name
Check Chrome's Downloads list
If you saved the file from a website in Chrome, Chrome keeps its own list of everything it downloaded. Open Chrome, tap More (the three dots at the top right), then tap Downloads. If your address bar sits at the bottom of the screen, swipe up on the address bar and tap Downloads. Tap a file to open it. Other browsers, such as Samsung Internet, have a similar Downloads option in their menu.
Look inside the app that downloaded it
Not every download goes to the Downloads folder. Movies, shows, music, and videos you download to watch offline in apps like Netflix or YouTube stay inside that app and can only be played there. Some other apps, such as PDF readers or chat apps, save files in their own folder or in their own files section. Open the app you used and look for a Downloads, Files, or Offline area.
Normal vs. not
Usually normal
A streaming download not showing in your files app, or a file from a chat app sitting in that app's own folder. This is how those apps are designed.
Worth a closer look
A download that finished but cannot be found anywhere, even by searching its name. Try downloading it again and watch the message that appears when it finishes, which usually has an Open button.

Common questions
- I opened a file but now I cannot find it. Did it download?
- Not always. Opening a file in an app does not always save a copy to Downloads. Go back to where the file came from, open it again, and look for a Download or Save option.
- How do I delete downloads I no longer need?
- In your files app, open Downloads, touch and hold the file, and tap Delete. On Samsung, deleted files go to the Trash in My Files and stay there for 30 days before they are removed for good, so you can still bring one back.
- Can my downloads go to an SD card?
- On phones with a memory card slot, some apps and browsers let you save downloads to the card. In My Files on Samsung, tap SD card under storage locations to see files saved there.
- Can I see my downloads on a computer?
- Yes. Connect the phone with a USB cable, choose File transfer on the phone, and open the Download folder from your computer.
