On a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings, tap Connections, then Wi-Fi Calling, and turn the switch on. On a Pixel and many other Android phones, open Settings, tap Network & internet, then SIMs, pick your carrier, and turn on Wi-Fi calling. If you do not see the option, your carrier or plan may not offer it.

Steps to check

Show steps for:
  1. Connect to Wi-Fi first

Wi-Fi calling only works while your phone is on Wi-Fi. Swipe down from the top of the screen and check that Wi-Fi is on and connected to your home network or another network you trust.

  2. Turn on Wi-Fi calling in Settings

Open the Settings app and find the Wi-Fi calling switch. Turn it on. If the option is missing, your carrier does not support it on your phone or plan, and your carrier can tell you for sure.

    • Samsung Settings, then Connections, then Wi-Fi Calling. On some Galaxy phones you can also swipe down with two fingers and tap the Wi-Fi Calling button in Quick settings.
    • Pixel Settings, then Network & internet, then SIMs, then your carrier's SIM, then Wi-Fi calling.
  3. Add your emergency address if asked

When you first turn it on, your phone or carrier may ask for an emergency address. This is the address emergency services may use if you call them over Wi-Fi, so enter where you usually are, such as your home, and tap Save. On Samsung you can change it later under Wi-Fi Calling, then Emergency address.

  4. Choose when Wi-Fi is used (optional)

Some phones let you pick whether calls prefer Wi-Fi or the mobile network. On Samsung, open Settings, Connections, Wi-Fi Calling, then Calling preference. If your preferred choice is not available, the phone uses the other one on its own. These options depend on your carrier.

  5. Make a call as usual

Once it is on, you call and text the normal way. When a call goes over Wi-Fi, you may see Wi-Fi calling or Internet call on the screen or in the notification. When you are away from Wi-Fi, calls use your carrier's network like before.

Normal vs. not

Usually normal

Wi-Fi calling turning itself off now and then. Pixel phones switch it off when they detect a problem and may show a notification. If it stays off, Google suggests restarting the phone or contacting your carrier.

Worth a closer look

The option is there but calls still fail on Wi-Fi every time. Check that the Wi-Fi itself works, update the Carrier Services app in the Play Store, and then contact your carrier to make sure Wi-Fi calling is active on your account.

Common questions

Does Wi-Fi calling cost extra?
Many carriers include it, but Google notes some may charge for it. Check with your carrier if you are not sure.
Why can't I find Wi-Fi calling on my phone?
If the switch is not in Settings, your carrier or plan does not offer it on that phone. Your carrier can confirm and sometimes turn it on for your account.
Do I need to do anything different to make a Wi-Fi call?
No. After you turn it on, dial and text the same way you always do. The phone picks Wi-Fi when it is available.
