How do I turn off Gemini on my Android phone?

Open Settings, go to Apps, then Default apps, then Digital assistant app, and choose None. That stops Gemini from opening when you hold the power button or say "Hey Google". You can also turn off "Hey Google" inside the Gemini app, and set the power button back to the power menu.
Steps to check
Decide how much you want to turn off
Gemini is Google's assistant. On many phones it now answers when you hold the power button or say "Hey Google". You have three choices. You can stop it from opening by accident but keep the app. You can turn off the phone's assistant completely. Or you can delete the Gemini app. Google's help notes that deleting the app on its own does not stop Gemini from being your assistant, so the settings below matter most. None of these steps delete your photos, messages, or Google Account.
Set your digital assistant to None
This is the biggest single switch. Open Settings, tap Apps, then Default apps (on some phones, Choose default apps), then Digital assistant app. Tap Default digital assistant app and choose None. If it says Google, that means Gemini (or the older Google Assistant) is your assistant. If you cannot find this menu, type "digital assistant" in the search box at the top of Settings.
- Samsung Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Digital assistant app → Digital assistant app → None.
- Pixel Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app → Default digital assistant app → None.
Set the power button back to the power menu
Holding the power button is the most common way Gemini opens by mistake. You can change that hold back to the menu for turning off or restarting the phone. Motorola phones: open Settings, tap Gestures, then Press & hold power button (on some models, Power key, then Press & hold), and choose Power menu. If you pick anything other than Power menu, you turn the phone off by pressing the power and volume up buttons together.
- Samsung Samsung calls it the Side button. Settings → Advanced features → Side button → Long press → Power off menu.
- Pixel Settings → System → Gestures → Press and hold the power button → Power menu.
Turn off "Hey Google" so Gemini does not answer your voice
If Gemini wakes up when the TV is on or when you talk nearby, turn off voice activation. Open the Gemini app. Tap your profile picture or initial, then Settings, then Talk to Gemini hands-free. Turn off "Hey Google". The Gemini app stays on your phone, and you can still open it by tapping it if you ever want to.
Stop Gemini from opening on the lock screen
If Gemini pops up while the phone is still locked, for example in a pocket or bag, change its lock screen setting. Open the Gemini app. Tap your profile picture or initial, then Settings, then Gemini on lock screen. Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
Check the corner swipe on Pixel phones
On Pixel phones that use gesture navigation, a swipe up from the bottom left or bottom right corner can open the assistant. To turn it off, open Settings, tap System, then Navigation mode, then the settings gear next to Gesture navigation, and turn off Swipe to invoke assistant. Other brands may have a similar gesture, so search Settings for "assistant" if Gemini opens when you swipe.
Only if you want it gone: delete the Gemini app
If you never want to see the Gemini app, you can uninstall it like other apps. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture at the top right, then Manage apps & devices, then Manage. Tap Gemini, then Uninstall. On some phones it came built in, and built-in apps can sometimes only be turned off (disabled), not removed. You can always reinstall it from the Play Store later. Do the steps above first, because Google says deleting the app does not by itself change your default assistant.
Normal vs. not
Usually normal
A screen inviting you to try Gemini after an update, or Gemini opening because you held the power button a little too long. Those are settings, and the steps above change them.
Worth a closer look
An assistant you did not choose that keeps coming back after you set it to None, or pop-ups that open unfamiliar websites or ask you to install apps from outside the Play Store. That can be a sign of an unwanted app, and our pop-up ads guide shows how to check.
What people are saying
I keep pressing "No Thanks" each time, but a few hours later it will do it again.

Common questions
- Will turning off Gemini break my phone or delete anything?
- No. Choosing None for the assistant, changing the power button, and turning off "Hey Google" only change how your phone responds. Your apps, photos, contacts, and Google Account stay as they are, and you can turn any of it back on later.
- My phone keeps asking me to set up Gemini. How do I make it stop?
- Tapping No thanks is safe. Google's help does not describe a single switch for those invitation screens, but setting your digital assistant app to None tells the phone you do not want an assistant at all. Google's steps for stopping Gemini do not ask you to turn off the whole Google app, so you can leave it as it is.
- Can I go back to the old Google Assistant instead?
- Sometimes. Google's help says that where it is offered, you can open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, then tap Switch to Google Assistant and confirm. If you do not see that choice, it is no longer offered on your phone, and setting the assistant to None is the way to stop Gemini.
- Does turning off Gemini delete what I already asked it?
- No. Your past Gemini chats stay saved until you delete them. In the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, then Gemini Apps Activity, where you can delete past activity or turn off Keep Activity.
