Trying to save phone numbers with extensions in contacts so it will dial entire number with pause

I have to call several people at 800 numbers, with extensions and even pound signs #.  With my previous Windows phones, I could save my number with a comma in between the number and extension which would create a pause.  It also allowed a pound sign at the end.  I can’t get that to work on my Android.   Does anybody know if there are different characters that will achieve the same result?
